It took a 7-year-old girl one photo and a frown to get a giant company to change its sexest marketing. Tesco--the British supermarket giant already in deep trouble--reacted swiftly to a viral tweet that showed 7-year-old Maggie expressing incredulity at a store sign that said a Marvel superhero alarm clock was meant for boys. (You'd think Tesco marketing execs might have seen the value of doubling the size of its customer base earlier, but no.)
The photo, posted by Maggie's mom, got a lot of attention. “This alarm clock would make a great gift for both girls and boys,” a Tesco spokesperson told BuzzFeed News. “The sign has been removed and we’re sorry if it caused any confusion.” Maggie not only likes superheroes--in her spare time she is one!
