Dr. Buzz Aldrin, one of the first human beings to reach the moon, wasn’t the man who said: “That’s one small step for man, one giant leap for mankind.” Fellow astronaut Neil Armstrong spoke those indelible words. But Dr. Aldrin did a Reddit AMA today and made an interesting choice in his description. Aldrin wrote: “I am Dr. Buzz Aldrin, back again on reddit. I am an aeroastro engineer, and crew member of humanity’s first landing on the moon. AMA!”
Notice that’s not “America’s first” moon landing, nor is it “man’s first.” Aldrin chooses “humanity’s first landing on the moon”–the most inclusive phrase he could choose. Aldrin fields a lot a questions at Reddit–he’s promoting a cool space game, btw–and he also mentions what he’s up to these days: “I’m personally involved in evolving the special orbital dynamics that facilitate transporting humans between Earth and Mars.” Someday in the future, humanity will be glad for Aldrin’s late work, too.
