When Jerry Seinfeld was asked recently “What makes a great bit?” he quickly replied: "I love Brian Regan’s ‘Donut Lady'.” Seinfeld describes the now famous bit from a comedian’s perspective: “I’m sure when he [Regan] first wrote ‘Donut Lady’ he didn’t think this is going to really hit people hard…That’s not planned. It just happened.”
'Donut Lady' is about the decision process--and silly exchanges between you and a donut lady behind the counter as you select the donuts you want to make up a dozen. As if you don't know how to subtract, the 'donut lady' counts down as you pick them: “You have eight left…you have six left.” And then panic ensues when you make a mistake. Probably not surprising about Jerry Seinfeld liking a donut bit, really. His new show, after all, is about getting coffee.
