Enormous and Incomprehensible

Self-proclaimed environmentalist/hoarder/photographer Chris Jordan has re-created Van Gogh’s “Starry Night” with 50,000 cigarette lighters (equal to the estimated number of pieces of plastic per square mile in the world’s oceans). With such imagery, Jordan hopes to raise questions about “the roles and responsibilities we each play as individuals in a collective that is increasingly enormous, incomprehensible and overwhelming.”

He also likes to make a little loot. The photograph Gyre II (Starry Night) is 44” x 56”, and only one of six prints – at $18,000 – is available at the Kopeikin Gallery in Los Angeles, where some nights more stars can be seen in restaurants than in the sky.
