Conservative commentator, provocateur, and four-times-married former drug addict Rush Limbaugh publicly apologized, lamenting that his “choice of words was not the best” when he called a Georgetown University student interested in practicing safe sex a “prostitute” and a “slut.” In apologizing, Limbaugh seems to have given away his formula, heretofore a secret though critics have conjectured. “For twenty years,” he wrote, “I have illustrated the absurd with absurdity.”
The Rushed mea culpa came after six advertisers had suspended financial support of his program. Today a ninth sponsor withdrew. House Speaker Boehner courageously called Limbaugh’s remarks “inappropriate.”
